**Current info regarding monome compilation album (this should be updated regularly as changes and decisions occur).** Note that whilst the project has the backing of monome, it is a separate, private, user project, and not part of monome (the company). All enquiries should be directed to Summer Rain Recordings (admin (at) summerrainrecordings (dot) net) or Auditory Canvas on the monome forum. Questions, and decisions requiring a vote or group decision are in //italic// **Concept:** Proposal is to release a compilation album with all interested monome users contributing a track, or collaboration. The Album will be released on Summer Rain Recordings (www.summerrainrecordings.net). The album will be both a digital release and CD release. Digital distribution is provided by contract between Summer Rain Recordings and ioda (www.iodalliance.com) US distribution is in hand for CD distribution, and a European CD distributor is being sought at the moment. The album will be available on over 200 online stores, as well as the label's own store, for which each artist can have a widget download store to add to their myspace page and websites etc. **Royalties:** A percentage of artist and label royalties will be donated to a fund for monome app developers - //a percentage needs to be agreed, details of how this fund is shared out also need to be agreed// The artist will receive 80% of net receipts on sales for their track/division of album sales. Net receipts are defined as monies received from the distributors after retailer and distributor deductions. to give you an idea of how much this is: __For Digital Sales through our own online store:__ Store front provider takes 35% Mechanical royalties are deducted and paid by store front provider for non US sales. no distributor cut is deducted. 65% (less mechanical royalty if applicable) of sale is net receipts. __For digital sales with all other online retailers:__ Retailer takes an average of 30% of the retail price, and also pays mechanical royalties to the collection society in the country of sale - approx 8% of the retail price for every country except the US. This royalty is claimable by the artist seperately from their chosen collection society such as the MCPS. US mechanical royalties are paid within the royalty paid by the label (80% of net receipts). The distributor takes 20% of the remainder - 5% of this is donated to our chosen fund on their behalf) Label receives the rest = net receipts. __For online CD sales (US):__ Amazon's disc on demand service is an option with our distributor, whilst it offers a lower return, it saves the need for outlay of producing a large batch of CDs, and provides the option of bulk buying at cost for offline sales. Other options exist, but by the time postage, packaging, and online sales are handled, it often isn't any more profitable. However, if the community has any ideas and options then we can look into those further. typical return is 40 - 45% of full list price (if retailer decides to discount CD then they still pay us the percentage based on full list price - they subsidize the discount). Online CD sales for Europe is yet to be determined, but above guide will probably be close. **Costs:** The label will cover all release costs. no costs are ever deducted from the artist royalties. Tracks will be registered with the PPL/MCPS/CATCO, and assigned ISRC codes, and album assigned a UPC/Barcode. **Contracts/licensing:** All material released on the album will be contracted between Summer Rain Recordings and the artist. Contracts are based on master rights only, the artist retains publishing rights at all times. 2 options exist: 1. exclusive master use rights - the artist grants the label exclusive rights to release the track on the album, therefore meaning that the label hold the rights to the track for the duration of the contract, this provides the ability for the track to have single downloads as well as being sold as part of the album. 2. Non-exclusive master use rights - the artist grants a non exclusive license to the label to release the track as part of the album. This will only enable sales as part of an album, and not single sales of the track. Given the public nature of the wiki, example contracts won't be posted here for download, but you are more than welcome to request a copy for review by sending an email to: admin (at) summerrainrecordings (dot) net **Submissions** Submissions can be posted for everyone to hear and comment on here: http://summerrainpromotions.net/monomecompilation/ There is an upload facility where the tracks get added to the music player on the main page as soon as they are uploaded. Please only add mp3 to the website, we will sort out master aif/wav files for all selected tracks at a later time. Files should be named in the following format: Artist Name - Track Name.mp3 Flies need to be at 44.1 khz sample rate, and any bit rate, so 320kbps is fine. The player doesn't read id3 data. //Should we have voting to decide which tracks make it on to the album? We have the option of doing more than one volume, so is this necessary?// Current interest is approx. 50 users. this provides enough tracks for 2 double album releases - vol. 1, and vol. 2 These can be released with separate lead times, giving some users more time to submit for the second album. Release turnaround time is 8 weeks from master submission to the distributor to release date. **The Deadline for Vol. 1 submissions is February 20th 2009.** The deadline for Vol. 2 is to be confirmed - approx. 2 - 3 months from now (23rd January). **Guidelines/Rules:** Tracks submitted must have been at least in part created using a monome, they don't have to be totally created on one, but a monome should have at least played a part in the production track. The artist must own the right or license to use all sound content in the track. This means no uncleared samples. If the track contains content 'borrowed' from another track/film/tv/radio/media then permission from the original owner must be obtained - proof may be required in certain circumstances. - Sample CDs and sample packs are fine, as they normally provide license to use the samples as part of the purchase/free download. Tracks should be no more than 8 minutes in length (preferably less) - this is to ensure that we can keep the track count high to make sure more people have a chance to get a track onto the album. The contract is single signatory, with the exception of collaborations from users in the community, where split contracts will be provided to ensure best interests of each artist. This means if you are submitting a track made by a group then a group agreement should be in place, and a signatory elected for the contract. Final tracks for the album will need to be provided in the format of 16 bit, 44.1khz wav or aif master files. mp3s or other compression formats will not be accepted by the distributor. **Artwork** Artwork for the albums also needs to be submitted. It's proposed that users can submit artwork for potential usage, with a user vote to decide which artwork makes it to the cover for both Vol. 1 and Vol.2 . //Should we go with a forum which we at the label can create? or should this be done via the monome forum as a post?// Artwork spec for digital release should be 1400 x 1400 pixels, @ 300 dpi Artwork spec for CD should be the standard double CD jewel case (front sleeve and back inlay) //Last updated on 22nd of January 2009 by Auditory Canvas.//
